Exploring Society Photographically

Students worked with internationally known Mexican documentary photographer to achieve a body of images along with text to express the issues that we are facing today. Students used photography as a means to document the current economic realities that we are facing today, such as home foreclosures, loss of jobs, businesses closing, cost increases in gasoline and food, etc.. This class engaged students in a positive and creative manner as to how to make a difference in society through their reflective images and words for change.

In dealing with the current economic crisis, I made an attempt to dig further. I didn't want to merely focus on the obvious of home foreclosures and job losses. I wanted to look at the way we some may perceive poverty and those in it. How race and class play a role. I think this topic may have been and still is too complex for me to capture through photographs and a video. But with the inspiration of Martin Gilens and Gordon Parks, I hope I was able to do it some justice and at least convey my thoughts.

Images of Mexico: Primero Los Pobres

It is through photography that I attempt to have a better understanding of the current political, economic, and social problems facing the country.

My inspiration derives from an experience I had walking the streets of Mexico City, observing a group of protesters from the state of Veracruz. Their rally cries demanded that a cold-hearted government listen and cater to the needs of the poor instead of corporate contracts.
The Mexican economy is one of the biggest in the world, holding the 12th position and continually surpasses the trillion-dollar mark in Gross Domestic Product. Yet, despite the economic growth and the intent to become a more modern country, the poor are continually ignored.
I aim to capture the realities of many workers in Mexico – those from Veracruz, the indigenous population, and those in the informal market - all of whom are affected by political, social, and economic strife.
My intention is not to romanticize the poor, but rather capture the harsh reality of those struggling for a voice and place in society.
I choose to shoot in black and white in order to connect the viewer with the subjects and allow them to explore their emotions with the images. Additionally, I hope to establish an uncertainty of time. These images could have been taken last week or 20 years ago -- accentuating Mexico’s inability to nurture reform.
